With the sudden closure of schools, many parents, teachers, schools, and students are looking for distance learning resources to help manage the transition to widespread home learning.
In the wake of the world-wide Corvid-19 pandemic, many schools have been forced to close for extended periods as a way to flatten the curve of virus spread.
Flattening the curve includes "...simple interventions like social distancing and keeping kids home from school in order to slow the spread of a disease so that the healthcare system could keep up." – The story behind ‘flatten the curve,’ the defining chart of the coronavirus by FastCompany

After the great experience working with our client Oxford University Press Filming Smart Choice 4e, it's great being back with them to help film the production of their recent launch for 3rd Edition Of Q: Skills for Success. We worked closely with the teams at OUP in the UK and New York to implement their creative brief while filming at their Manhattan location:
"The approach to the campaign is to create engaging, insightful content, providing a behind the scenes story ... We want to take a look past the finished product and catch a glimpse at the processes and effort involved with those directly responsible." – OUP / United Visual Ltd
Special thanks to Devika (OUP UK), Austin (United Visual Ltd), Kyle (OUP NY), Katherine (OUP NY), as well as our THISLEARNING production team Kris and RJ.

About 2 years in the making – we're so honored to have worked on film and video production for Oxford University Press and their English Language educational series, and equally excited by our collaborative results:
There were a large number of variables on the project, but Kris was completely on top of it all... his direction and organization on set, as well as excellent post-production work, produced a series of over 55 short film clips, with fantastic end results. – Michael Kedward / Oxford University Press (UK)
Our services included full pre-production, production, and post-production. We were responsible for managing a team of internal/external video producers, creators, and actors to work closely with one of the world's leading international publisher's marketing and editorial teams in the United States and the UK to conceptualize and develop the video series.
The final production deliveries included over 55 scenes filmed and photographed in Manhattan and Jersey City, including full directorial, pre-production, production, and post-production services, budget, workflow, casting, directing, team management, post-production and editing (Final Cut Pro X), delivery to spec, and client approval over about a 6-month project period.
We're looking forward to an exciting production and relationship ahead!

Stay tuned to learn how the student screenwriters resolve the real life ethical dilemma they wrote into the heart of the #LIKEUSMovie. It could be on the other side of this door. – FSA Performing Arts
LIKE US is an independent, anti-bullying short film about a topic that is close to many of us (myself and my brother included). It's a story about how self-identified misfits come together to achieve something greater, overcome their fears, and help one of their own. It's also a story about perseverance, belonging, and all of us.
As part of the media arts and filmmaking classes we offer, I was hired by FSA Performing Arts in Jersey City, NJ, to lead the instructional writing team, direct, and produce a film for students and by students. We wanted to teach students how to create a story they could relate to while also solving an ethical dilemma in a positive way to inspire other students. The project spanned over 9 months, included over 80 students and adults, and was filmed at 6 locations across multiple neighborhoods in Jersey City, NJ.
Here's a first look at the "Doing My Best" scene.
It also introduces our lead actors.

Our THISLEARNING community member Tracy Reinholt's son passed away last weekend – we had the opportunity to appear on camera with Hunter and will always remember his enthusiasm, sincerity, and fun. Hunter's Celebration of Life is on Monday, 4/29 at Liberty House from 4:30-7:00pm in Jersey City.
To all our fellow parents, Tracy asks us all to cherish our loved ones and give our children an extra hug, as she reflects on the loss of her beloved son:
"My darkest hour is now as I have to say goodbye to the love of my life, my Hunter. No words can touch the profound sadness that engulfs me, but I am truly grateful for the love that surrounds me. This is a tragic tale - and as with all tales, there is a lesson to be learned - "it only takes once". My brave beautiful soul lost his life because he chose to experiment just one time with something all too dangerous. The epidemic of prescription drugs is all too real - please spread the word far and wide - especially to your children." – https://www.plazafh.com/notices/Hunter-ReinholtDemree
Hunter passionately advocated for improving the lives of the homeless. In lieu of flowers, please donate in Hunter's memory to the local Building Blocks homeless outreach charity located in New Jersey.

The support and community involvement around LIKE US has been outstanding. While the story grew, its impact and importance to students became more clear, but funding was also running out in December. We collectively knew would have to make sacrifices to push through past our funding resources to make the best film we could.
Together with Kim Correro, Ann Wallace, cast, and crew, – and through the collaborative production efforts of FSA Performing Arts, THISLEARNING, and many many supporters, friends, and family (thanks Uncle Mike, Mooga, and Blake!) – we've been working tirelessly since last summer through this spring to put LIKE US on the big screen.
It's been a long road with a lot of close calls and sleepless nights. There will likely be more to come. But LIKE US has also been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to help create what may likely be the largest independent film related to a school in Jersey City – and by the time we've completed all scenes, it may be one of the largest school oriented independent films in the nation.
Our goal is to show LIKE US as an anti-bullying film in Jersey City and schools around the country to help as many students, families, and administrators as possible. With almost 40 hours of rehearsal and film footage captured, most of our 30+ scenes completed, and post-production on the horizon, we are almost there. We plan to have LIKE US completed by this summer to enter into the Golden Door International Film Festival.
Meanwhile, as a first look, here is a short clip featuring our opening sequence to the film (scene #2 "First Looks" and scene #3 "In From The Cold").

]]>We're proud to announce our production of the 2018 TECCS Film fundraising campaign video to help The Ethical Community Charter School (TECCS) and the Family School Association (FSA) continue to inspire, educate and connect students with the arts!
We created the TECCS Film fundraiser campaign video to capture the essence of students learning on a real film set can open their world to opportunities. The fundraiser is designed to give students a chance to make an independent movie – written, produced, and starring students, with guidance from seasoned professionals – with an actual theatrical release planned for early 2019. We directed, produced, and edited the video using footage at TECCS and our THISLEARNING® studio in downtown Jersey City.
This semester TECCS is making a movie produced, written, and starring students in 2nd -8th grade. The project will be led by Kris Van Nest, Executive Producer of the online media network THISLEARNING®. Kris will lead the kids through a 10-week after-school workshop about the filmmaking process, and then direct and edit a live-action short film, written by and starring our students. Working alongside Kris will be several TV and film veterans who will mentor the kids in their areas of expertise. The movie will have a red carpet premiere in early 2019 at the historic Loew’s Jersey Theater, and will be sponsored by the Golden Door International Film Festival in Jersey City. Tax deductible donations mean we can offer this educational opportunity to students for FREE!
The FSA Performing Arts Program is an after school enrichment program at The Ethical Community Charter School (TECCS), a K-8 public school in Jersey City, NJ. The school has a focus on ethics, social justice, and exploring and helping the community around us. We have one of the most diverse student bodies in the world, with more than 40 languages spoken at home in a school of just under 400 students. However, TECCS is one of the lowest-funded public schools in New Jersey—by law, NJ charters get 90% of the funding other public schools do, but in reality we get only 55%. Programs like Performing Arts only exist because of the financial support of the community. FSA (Family School Association) is a 501c3 and raises money for extracurricular programs. The Arts program is overseen by a team of volunteer parents who raise funds in order to provide a creative space that is free of charge to all students who wish to participate. FSA Performing Arts has supported plays, concerts, and talent shows, but this year we’re going bigger.

EVENT PRODUCER / PRODUCTION MANAGER / VIDEOGRAPHY
We are excited to announce THISLEARNING® has been contracted to provide audio / visual, event production management, and videography services for the 5th Start Something Champions Gala held at The Liberty House November, 2016. Working closely with Rising Tide Capital, our services will include media arrangement, selection, cue-to-cue, guest and VIP guidance, and more.
This year we're grateful to also bring back our team of key vendors and consultants:
The Event Production Manager contract for the Start Something Champions Gala is one of the biggest contracts of the year for Rising Tide Capital. We will work closely with RTC staff, featured speakers, and audio/visual providers to design and coordinate the Gala’s program of activities.
"...a critical member of our gala team is our event producer Kris Van Nest. Kris’ video production company is called THISLEARNING and while we have hired him in the past to produce video for the gala, two years ago we asked him to help us produce the entire event—to liaise and negotiate with all of our AV vendors, keep our scripts on track, and help us to design the event. Two galas later and while Kris is still responsible for video, I think it is pretty safe to say that he has cemented his role as event producer. Like so many of our entrepreneurs, Kris isn’t just a vendor. Whether he’s working on video or our gala, he has a vested interest in our success—he wants to make sure that we are telling the story of our work in an effective way, and he goes above and beyond to ensure just that." – Esther Fraser, Director of Communications / Rising Tide Capital from Keeping Dollars Circulating In Our Local Economies

]]>Last night, Brittani Bunney and Paul Silverman from SILVERMAN invited past and future Principals For A Day (#PFAD) to their 2016 kick-off reception to welcome new members ahead of the next PFAD citywide event being held on May 5th, 2016.
The evening gave attendees the opportunity to share their experiences and excitement over a drink and some light appetizers.
The all-day upcoming PFAD event, including classroom visits and school tours, will give members of our community a unique opportunity to become "principals" at local schools. Participants see first-hand what make our schools great while also learning about the challenges our schools face. The goal – developing long-term, productive relationships that will support enhanced student achievement.
"Anyone curious about seeing how a Jersey City public school works can be a principal." said Brittani Bunney, PFAD organizer and this year's honoree Superintendent For A Day. "The ultimate goal of the program is that community members and business people in the area will participate, see how great the schools actually are, learn the challenges our public schools are facing, and from that experience build a long term relationship."
We had the chance to be a PFAD in both 2013 and 2015. As a dad, host/instructor, and community member, it was one of the most valuable experiences we could have to help provide for the successful future of our community. It's a highly recommended program and we encourage you to get involved when their program runs next.
Special thanks to SILVERMAN's Paul Silverman and Brittani Bunney for their deep interest and support of learning and education in Jersey City. Contact Brittani Bunney at SILVERMAN for more information on how you can participate in the Principal For A Day program.

The Jersey City & Hoboken Charter School Alliance invited THISLEARNING® to participate in their second annual Charter School Principal for a Day, Friday, December 11, 2015.
The Charter School Principal for a Day program promotes local business involvement in our local charter schools. Together with Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, we were paired as Principals For A Day to visit The Ethical Community Charter School (TECCS), one of the charter schools in the alliance, and spend the morning alongside Principal Marta Bergamini. After a warm welcome by Principal Bergamini and her staff, we jumped right in to greet the students during their morning announcements and then tour the TECCS classrooms to learn more about their unique curriculum. Throughout the day, we learned first-hand about the challenges our schools face with goal of developing long-term, productive relationships that will support enhanced student achievement. We even caught up with our neighbor Kaivan and student friends Hunter and Davis who are all attend there!
We then joined a follow up conversation at GPs Restaurant in Jersey City, NJ, to share our experiences with the other principals and Principals for a Day (P4Ds). The luncheon served to further develop the relationships with the schools that will be mutually rewarding and last far beyond this one day.
Our collective participation will act as an example for other business leaders to help provide for the successful future of our community. It's a highly recommended program and we encourage you to get involved when their program runs next.

Check out this video we produced as part of our video services for Rising Tide Capital's Community Business Academy (CBA). The CBA is a hands-on class that offers entrepreneurs a one-of-a-kind experience in small business development and networking.
Our client's goal was to capture the experiential, fun, and non-traditional nature of the class with an insider feel while also showcasing aspects of the unique instruction. We taped footage during two classes and worked with our client to add graphics and plus a professional voice-over. We also created a Spanish-language version for additional markets.
We're proud to share that this video was chosen by RTC to be played during the 4th annual 2015 Start Something Challenge Gala.

As part of our video production services, we'll be taping Frank's new CD release concert on October 28, 2015 – Frank has been working on this project for over 8 years and it is shaping up to be a great event.
Learn more / RSVP on the Facebook event page or see the overview below, and visit Frank's site to give his music a listen.
On Wednesday October 28, for one night only, Jersey City songwriter Frank Ippolito leads a band that ebbs and flows between an intimate trio of acoustic guitar, cello, & percussion to a 12 piece ensemble that features horns, soaring slide guitar, and swirling organ - held together by the austere scrape and propulsive strum of Frank Ippolito’s acoustic guitar. With special guests that include the smoky jazz vocals of Ariel Guidry, the screaming sax of Bryan Bennihove, and the lush backing vocals of Jersey City's all-girl a capella group Cabaret Sauvignon, the show will explore the music from the recently released Watermark Project CD in all its drama and nuance.
