Kris Van Nest / THISLEARNING® and Sam Pesin / Friends of Liberty State Park

If your kids love learning outside and exploring the outdoors, one place they can do that is in Liberty State Park (LSP), one of our Nation's largest and most beloved urban green spaces. We stopped by Friends of Liberty State Park (FOLSP)'s annual Recognition Luncheon which celebrated the grassroots effort to save the urban oasis for today and for future generations and also recognized those who have stood out in contributing to the park's protection and improvement.

Held on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at Liberty House Restaurant right inside the park, the event was organized by the non-profit group FOLSP, headed by Sam Pesin, whose father, Morris Pesin, is known as the "father" of Liberty State Park.

Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop, Assemblywoman Angela McKnight, Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, Freeholder Bill O'DeaFreeholder Anthony L. RomanoJersey City Council President Rolando Lavarro Jr.Councilman Jermaine Robinson, and many others attended in recognition of the value that LSP brings to our community.

Awardees included:

  • Andrew Willner - Founder & Former Head of NY/NJ Baykeeper. Andrew is a champion of LSP and has been a leader of efforts to protect waterways and land for over 25 years.
  • Bike JC – This grassroots advocacy group, which aims to make streets safe for bicyclists & promote a “bike culture,” was on the battle frontlines to defeat LSP privatization plans.
  • Tough Mudder - Held its physical endurance teamwork event at LSP and donated very generously to FOLSP for improvements, such as 50 new flag poles for state flags.
